European Raw Materials Alliance, Germany

I am the Director of the European Raw Materials Alliance (ERMA) at EIT RawMaterials. ERMA was launched by the European Commission on 29 September 2020 to make Europe economically more resilient by diversifying its supply chains, creating jobs, attracting investments to the raw materials value chain, fostering innovation, training young talents and contributing to the best enabling framework for raw materials and the Circular Economy worldwide. Check out our website at Together with the other members of our EIT RawMaterials Management Team, I am responsible for creating and implementing our strategic agenda and for all its operations.

I have a passion for the natural world and a personal commitment to sustainability and social responsibility. Before joining EIT RawMaterials I was a professor and geochemistry laboratory Director in the School of Earth Sciences at The University of Queensland in Australia. During my 20+ years of academic career I won three major teaching awards (including a Carrick Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning) and coordinated (as the Chair of the School's Teaching and Learning Committee) arguably the most awarded Earth Sciences undergraduate curriculum across Australian universities.

Between 1995 and 2017 I have led several programs aimed at establishing human impacts at research stations in the Australian Antarctic Territory, including the Airlink program (direct flight connection between Australia and Antarctica). My research and exploration activities have provided the scientific basis for the definition of policies for the protection of environmentally sensitive areas of east Antarctica. I have been a Programme coordinator in the Australian National Centre for Groundwater Research and Training and in the Queensland Geothermal Energy Centre of Excellence. The main goal of my recent research has been to provide the geochemical tools for the assessment of risk to the environment and to human health, particularly at mine sites, following exposure to air, water and soil contaminated with metals and metalloids, particularly arsenic. I have coordinated mineral exploration and impact assessment projects in Australia, Brazil, Colombia, Ethiopia, Indonesia and Zambia.
