Senator for Western Australia

Government of Australia

Since being elected as Senator for Western Australia in 2014, I have tirelessly advocated for the critical metals industry in WA. The strategic importance of this industry is now at the forefront of discussions between Australia and the United States. I have raised this with representatives from NATO, the European Union, the United Kingdom, and during my visit to the USA in 2020.

Western Australia mines over 50% of the world’s lithium supply and produces all the other minerals which are key for developing technologies including phones, electrical vehicles, robotics, and defence applications.

As a consequence, the Federal Government has announced several initiatives including the Critical Minerals Strategy 2019, and produced two valuable documents – the Australian Critical Minerals Prospectus, and Critical Minerals Supply Chain in the United States – designed to assist and promote industry.

There is now a real opportunity for Australia to become an alternative, ethical and sustainable source of rare earth and other critical minerals. Importantly, we can move further down the value chain, presenting exciting new developments for our State.

I will continue to work with the Association of Mining and Exploration Companies, the Future Battery Industry CRC and others to ensure we are well placed to capture these prospects presented by these emerging technologies.
